Lecointe was the second in command on the "Belgica"" and Roald Amundsen participated as lieutenant. Also Frederic Cook who later claimed to be the first to have reached the northpole, took part on this expedition. The Belgica reached Antarctic waters in 1898. The crew subsequently being severly affected by scurvy and madness. Despite this, the expedition scientists brought back a substantial quantity of material.
